NEW UPDATES: August LSAT-Flex

July 8, 2020

UPDATE: 08/13/20

NEW LSAT-Flex Policy Changes - Email from LSAC:

We will now allow test takers to use a regular or mechanical pencil, or a pen, while taking the LSAT-Flex. You will still need to show your writing utensil(s) to the proctor during the check-in period.

In addition, test takers may use soft, non-electronic, non-corded/banded, generic foam ear plugs, which will need to be shown to and approved by your LSAT-Flex proctor.

LSAT Flex Website:

What am I allowed to have with me during LSAT-Flex?

Generally, your desktop must be clear of anything not test-related and should only have:

  • Five blank sheets of scratch paper (lined, unlined, or graphed)
  • Valid ID
  • One or more writing utensils (standard pencil, mechanical pencil, or ink pen, for example)
  • A highlighter
  • An eraser (no mechanical erasers or erasers with sleeves)
  • A pencil sharpener
  • Tissues
  • Soft, non-electronic, non-corded/banded, generic foam ear plugs
  • Beverage in plastic container or juice box (maximum size: 20 oz/591 ml). Aluminum cans are not permitted.

Each of these items must be held up and shown to the proctor during the security check-in procedure. Both sides of each sheet of scratch paper must be shown to the proctor and destroyed in camera view upon test completion.

You may wear an analog (nondigital) wristwatch. The watch may not have a dedicated start/stop functionality independent of telling time, but it may have an altered faceplate and a rotating “diver’s” bezel. Timing devices of any other kind are not permitted.

What if I need headphones, earplugs, or earbuds to take the test?

Starting with the August test, LSAT-Flex test takers may now use soft, non-electronic, non-corded/banded, generic foam ear plugs, which will need to be shown to and approved by your LSAT-Flex proctor. NOTE: Please ensure that your earplugs will not interfere with your ability to receive instruction from your proctor. Test takers are responsible for adhering to proctor instructions and communications at all times.

In addition, unless a specified accommodation has been granted, test takers cannot wear headphones, earbuds, or anything similar that is not a soft, non-electronic, non-corded/banded, generic foam ear plug. These types of items are unable to be monitored by proctors to ensure a fair and equal testing environment. It’s LSAC’s goal to safeguard your test and score by putting this policy in place to mitigate testing irregularities that could result in the termination of your session or cancellation of your score.

The August LSAT-Flex will be administered during the week of August 29. Most test takers will test on either Saturday, August 29; Sunday, August 30; or Monday, August 31, with a small number of tests occurring later in the week based on specific remote proctoring requirements. Currently, LSAC is targeting Friday, September 18, as the August LSAT-Flex score release date for all test takers, regardless of when they test during the week of August 29. About Score Preview

  • In response to requests and feedback from test takers, we have created a new score preview option for first-time test takers who wish to see their LSAT score before deciding whether or not to keep it as part of their LSAC transcript and report it to law schools. This feature will be available starting with the August 2020 test administration and all subsequent test administrations, and will be available for purchase starting around August 1.
  • What it costs: Score Preview will cost $45 for candidates who sign up prior to the first day of testing for a given test administration, or $75 for those who sign up during a specified period after their given test administration. (Please note: First-time test takers who have an approved LSAT fee waiver will receive Score Preview free of charge.)
  • How it works: First-time test takers who sign up for Score Preview will receive their scores at the same time other test takers receive theirs (assuming they have completed their LSAT Writing and have no holds on their accounts), and will have six (6) calendar days to decide if they want to cancel or keep their score. If no action is taken, their scores will be added to their LSAC transcript and released to schools at the end of the six-day period.

LSAT Writing Requirement:

  • All test takers must have a completed LSAT Writing sample on file in order to receive their score for the August LSAT-Flex and beyond.
  • LSAT Writing will now be available eight (8) days prior to every test administration.
