Law School Application Info

Applications

Early fall to mid-winter is the timeframe law school application cycles usually operate. Keep in mind that most schools admit students on a rolling basis, so it is definitely to your advantage to apply early! Note that some schools have early decision and early acceptance options in addition to regular admissions. Research schools' application requirements and consult Tianna for further guidance.

LSAT/GRE

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a required component of law school applications. The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is an alternative to the LSAT for some, but not all, law schools. Registration for the LSAT takes place through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) and fee waivers are available. Note that some schools require that you take the LSAT prior to the December and February test dates (check with individual schools for specific requirements). Most applicants choose to take the June or September test. Be sure to register early and as soon as you feel comfortable as seats are often limited (especially in Boston!!). Recommended LSAT resources are available in the Resources page.

CAS (Credit Assembly Service)

Regardless of having taken the LSAT, you must use the Credential Assembly Service (CAS) through the LSAC for preparing your application materials, including LSAT scores, transcripts, and rec letters. You don't need to worry about CAS until you're actually applying; however, don't wait until the last minute to submit your application materials as it takes some time for CAS to process your application components. It is common for applicants to simultaneously register for the LSAT and CAS.

Letters of Recommendation

Two recommendation letters from academic instructors are often required by law schools. If you are an alumnus, consider obtaining an additional recommendation from an employer.

Transcript

College transcripts must be sent to LSAC by the Registrar. Follow the LSAC's directions closely!

Resume & Personal Statement

Most schools require 2-3 pages for your personal statement, but do pay attention to character, word, or page limits! Be sure to draft and work closely with Tianna (more info on MIT resources page)!
